# Why does a small business need AI search visibility?

Nearly 6 in 10 small businesses do not know where to start with AI search, a survey of 1,041 owners shows. Why small businesses are more exposed.

A small business needs AI search visibility because McKinsey data shows roughly half of Google searches already show an AI summary. A survey of 1,041 small business owners from April 2026 found that nearly six in ten do not know where to start with AI search visibility. A small business has no budget for press relations and presence on dozens of platforms, so its own website carries more weight, not less, than it does for a large brand.

## Where do buyers search now, besides Google?

Increasingly in AI answers: about half of Google searches already show an AI summary, and 44 percent of people who use AI search call it their primary source of information.

McKinsey published a report in October 2025 showing that about 50 percent of Google searches already include an AI summary, with the share expected to pass 75 percent by 2028. The same report states that 44 percent of users of such search already name it their primary source of information, against 31 percent for classic search.

A McKinsey report also states another figure that matters specifically for a small business: a brand's own website makes up only 5 to 10 percent of the sources AI search draws on. The rest comes from other websites, forums, reviews and editorial coverage. For a large brand with a public-relations team this is manageable. For a small firm with one website and no budget for coverage in other publications, its own website remains almost the only thing it directly controls.

## Do small businesses know where to start?

Most do not: in a 2026 survey, nearly six in ten owners said they do not know where to start.

Squarespace ran its own survey of 1,041 business owners in April 2026. The result: nearly six in ten agreed with the statement "I don't know where to start" on AI search optimization, and more than two thirds had never checked how their business appears in AI answers at all.

Of those who had checked, 40 percent found incorrect information about their own business in an AI answer. An error left uncorrected can repeat itself in front of the next people who ask the same question.

## How big is the shift on the large platforms?

Large: Shopify reports traffic and orders from AI search to its stores up three times in a year.

Your business does not need to sell online to feel the direction of travel. Shopify told investors on its second-quarter 2026 call, on 5 August, that traffic to its stores from AI channels had tripled year over year, as had orders through those channels; in the first quarter the growth was eight and nearly thirteen times. New buyers order through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of traditional organic search.

The Shopify figures come from a large platform, not a small business, and are no guarantee of a similar pace everywhere. They show the direction the buyer moves in before reaching any website at all: through an AI answer, not through a list of results.

## Why is a small business more exposed?

Because it has no second channel: a large brand is present in dozens of other places, a small business usually is not.

A large brand offsets absence from one AI platform with presence in dozens of other places: its own editorial content, partnerships, press mentions. A small business usually has no such reserve. If the AI answer names the wrong address, an outdated phone number, or a competitor instead of you, there is no second channel to correct the impression right away.

So the first step is not a new website or an expensive campaign. It is checking what AI search platforms already say, using your customers' real questions, and fixing first what depends directly on your own website.

## Questions

### Do we need presence on every AI platform?

Not all at once. It is more useful to measure where your customers actually ask and fix that first, rather than chasing every platform at once without data on who searches for you where.

### Is being a small business a disadvantage by itself?

No. Your own website is among the few sources any business controls directly, large or small. The difference is in the resource to track the result regularly.

### Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews for local businesses?

Possibly. Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings and photos to OpenAI, disclosed in Yelp's February 2026 earnings release and reported by Axios on 23 July 2026. A WebFX check on 4 August 2026 found no Yelp citations among ChatGPT's answers to ten local queries in San Francisco, while Angi and Thumbtack did appear. The licence is not exclusive, so the same data could reach other AI platforms too. For now, the deal's effect on actual answers remains unclear.
