A multi-page website fits when you have several services, products or topics, each important enough for its own address. The line runs through the volume of content you already have, not personal taste over which version looks more modern. ## What is a one-page site good for? A comparison by Network Solutions describes a one-page site as suited to "businesses with a focused message" and a single offering, naturally comfortable on a phone because of the familiar scrolling behaviour, and low maintenance because there are no separate pages to update. A separate comparison by Slickplan narrows the audience further: simple offerings, local businesses, a portfolio with limited content. The same source adds a technical reason: "a single page could, in theory, load faster" since "you have the entire site on one page" and there is no sequence of separate page loads. On mobile comfort, Slickplan is direct: a one-page site "just performs better for a laundry list of reasons" on a mobile device. A multi-page site, though, remains fully viable with proper optimisation. ## What is a multi-page site good for? Network Solutions names a multi-page site as suited to a business with multiple products, services or extensive information, one that grows with the business. A one-page site, in contrast, does not easily grow beyond its original scope. Wix states the scalability difference directly: on a one-page site "new content must fit the same page." On a multi-page site "new pages integrate naturally" into the structure. Wix also names who benefits from multiple pages: multiple services, products or topics, online shops, blogs and service businesses, as well as companies planning to publish new content regularly going forward. ## How do SEO and mobile traffic affect the choice? Mobile devices make up about half or more of global website traffic: between 49 and 59 percent a month in 2026 per StatCounter. This figure strengthens the case for good phone behaviour on either option. On search ranking, Network Solutions says a one-page site struggles to target several keywords because of its single address. On a multi-page site, every separate page "lets you target a new keyword." Slickplan is more cautious: SEO on a single page alone "can be an option for a lot of sites, but it's a decision that should be made with great caution." A multi-page site, in contrast, offers "SEO-optimized content spread across different pages." Wix reaches a similar conclusion on local search: succeeding at local SEO needs "a page dedicated to that specific concept." A one-page site cannot structurally offer that. ## How do you actually decide between one page and several? Slickplan sums it up: the choice "is dependent on your content and what you hope to achieve," not on preference alone. Wix adds a clear boundary: "the dividing line is usually content volume, not preference." Technically yes, but per Wix, new content on a one-page site has to fit on the same page. A new page on a multi-page site integrates naturally into the structure. The switch is easier if the multi-page structure was planned from the start. ### Does a one-page site rank worse on Google? Not automatically worse, but narrower. Network Solutions notes that the single address gets in the way of targeting several keywords. Slickplan adds that SEO on a single page needs more attention, because there are fewer pages to spread the content across. ### Is a one-page website cheaper in the long run? Not necessarily. A comparison by Ottawa Web Genius notes a lower upfront cost for a one-page site in most cases. Against this, it notes a higher upfront cost for a multi-page site that often pays off better long-term. Another comparison, by GetBusinessSite, warns that "as your business grows, one-page websites can become difficult to expand."
