# How much does a website cost?

Put the scope in writing before comparing prices. Page count, languages, copy, design, integrations and handover can make two website quotations different purchases. Keep the build price separate from the costs of running and changing the site afterwards.

## What do published price examples tell you?

Ivemind’s 2026 guide lists €2,500–4,000 for a showcase site of 5–10 pages. WebArs uses €2,500–6,000 as a planning corridor for a focused small-business site. These are vendor examples, not comparable fixed quotations or an EU market average.

Use a guide to prepare questions for an actual quotation. Ask which pages, functions and content are included, whether the figures include VAT and which assumptions apply. Do not turn a broad range into the price of your own project without a matching scope.

For ErgoStrat, the page count and languages are written down before work starts. The build price follows that scope and is in the contract before the first instalment. An article about other providers’ prices is not an ErgoStrat tariff.

## Who produces the text and language versions?

Agree who supplies each text, image and translation, when it must be ready and who accepts it. Check whether the price includes editing existing material, writing new pages, image rights and moving content from the old site. “Client supplies content” is a responsibility that needs an actual owner and deadline.

Adding a language involves more than the body paragraphs. Include navigation, forms, messages, metadata and any alternate text versions in the scope. Decide who will keep them aligned when the service or catalogue changes. A translation allowance without those surfaces can leave part of the buying journey untranslated.

WPML lists volume-tiered PTC translation rates from €3.00 to €0.40 per 1,000 source words per target language, excluding VAT. Those software rates are not a quotation for human review or complete multilingual website work.

## How should you compare providers?

Compare deliverables and responsibilities before comparing an hourly rate or project total. A template adaptation, a custom design and a site connected to business systems are different scopes. Ask each provider to identify what is excluded and how changes are priced.

- List the pages, languages and functions to be delivered.
- State who writes, translates, reviews and approves the content.
- Agree ownership of the domain, hosting, files and connected accounts.
- Define acceptance checks and the point at which payments become due.
- Specify handover, training, support and approval of additional work.

Ask how a colleague will make an ordinary change after handover. Include migration and redirects if the old site has useful addresses. A low initial total does not tell you what later changes will cost or whether the agreed work can be maintained by your team.

## What costs continue after launch?

Budget separately for hosting or platform charges, domains, mailboxes, subscriptions, maintenance and support. Check payment-service or commerce fees where relevant. Ask what a routine month includes and which events need a separate quotation, such as a redesign, recovery or a new integration.

WebArs’ five-year illustration totals about €5,900 for CMS and €4,700–5,900 for static/SSR under assumed budgets, excluding major changes. It is a scenario, not evidence that every static site recovers its build cost through savings.

Build your own comparison from the written offers and the same time period. Include the work needed to keep the content and connected services current. Static pages can change the maintenance arrangement, but they do not remove every update, monitoring or support responsibility.

## Questions

### Is hosting included in an upfront build price?

Check the quotation rather than assuming it is. Record the hosting or platform fee, domain renewals and any included period separately. If a package bundles them, ask what happens at renewal and when the agreement ends.

### Why can two quotations for the same page count differ?

Page count alone does not define the job. Compare content, design, integrations, tests, revisions and handover. Have the provider explain the difference in deliverables before deciding that one amount buys the same work more cheaply.

### What does a second language add?

Ask for the word count, elements to translate, translation method, review, implementation and future updates as separate responsibilities. Software usage, professional language work and integration are different cost items. Keep the provider’s tax basis and limits visible alongside any estimate.

## The scope is written down before you pay

A website build with us starts by measuring your current site, then a written decision on page count and languages, with a fixed price, before we start building.
