What can an AI agent do for a business today?
Published examples include customer conversations, appointment booking, invoice processing and campaign analysis. The actual task depends on connected systems, permissions, data and checking the output. The “agent” label does not establish that a solution will work in your business.
How can it help with conversations and booking?
Vendasta describes functions for answering calls and messages, checking calendar availability, booking and sending confirmations. These are capabilities presented by a provider, not our product test or proof of error-free operation around the clock.
For a particular task, clarify where current availability comes from, how the customer is identified and who takes over an unclear conversation. Acknowledging an enquiry is not the same as meaningful contact, qualification or a sale. Track these events separately rather than treat a fast automatic reply as a demonstrated commercial outcome.
What can it do in administrative work?
Tabs’ published functions include recognising and extracting document data, matching it against contract terms, finding duplicates and routing exceptions to a person. Validated data can be posted into a connected finance system according to the configured process and permissions.
Before allowing an invoice to be posted or sent, check fields, approvals, error handling and the action record. A function description does not establish that a particular integration is compatible with your software. Who may correct and who approves remain process questions.
McKinsey reports observing 20–30% less time spent on data processing across a handful of finance functions with robust AI adoption. This is not a result for every finance business, every billing agent or your future project.
Which examples cover marketing and content?
BCG describes a consumer goods company where weekly campaign analysis moved from six analysts to one employee with an agent, with results in under an hour. A person reviews recommendations; advertising platforms are updated after human approval. This does not state that six jobs were removed.
In another example, BCG reports 95% lower blog production costs and a post in one day rather than four weeks. These are consultancy-reported results in particular organisations, not our case or a promise of equivalent cost, quality and timing. Content also needs checking before external use.
Which examples involve large organisations and IT?
BCG reports a tenfold cost reduction for virtual customer-service agents at a global bank and up to 40% higher productivity in an IT department modernising legacy technologies. These involve different tasks and measures. Do not add them or treat them as an average effect of adopting an agent.
For your own trial, record current volume, time, quality and exceptions. Include human review, corrections and maintenance time. A large-organisation example can suggest a task; it does not determine the budget or benefit for a small team.
What is the practical rule?
Choose the task before choosing the solution’s label. A workflow with fixed rules may be sufficient when the steps are known in advance. When a model chooses the next actions, limit its tools and permissions and check its response to unclear inputs, errors and missing access.
Define an owner, acceptance criterion and route to a person. Test typical and difficult cases, including a resubmitted enquiry or an already booked slot. These are checking recommendations, not evidence that the agent is already live or suitable for every task.
Questions
Do the examples apply to a small team?
Conversation, calendar and document functions can prompt particular checks. A provider offering them does not establish a ready-made solution for your business. BCG’s examples come from larger organisations; their results cannot automatically transfer to a small team.
Is appointment booking the easiest place to start?
Not always. Check the calendar, permissions, availability rules, confirmations and handling of errors. Not every booking requires a CRM, but that does not mean there is no integration. Choose a first task by checkability and consequences, not a universal ranking.
How long does a first narrow agent take?
Layer3Labs suggests 2–6 weeks for a single workflow using an existing model and 6–14 weeks for a platform connecting several workflows. The provider defines the period from signed scope to production rollout, not from first conversation to demonstration. This is neither an independent standard nor an ErgoStrat deadline; the actual plan depends on agreed work and checks.

Check which tasks make sense in your process.
The AI Opportunity Map orders tasks by the hours they cost you today; for the first three it gives a proposed tool, requirements, an owner and a build-effort range in hours, without a build price. A proposal does not replace a build and testing against real work.
