AI Search Visibility

What content do AI chatbots cite?

One of the largest published analyses on this topic covers over one million citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Reddit comes first by citation count on ChatGPT and Perplexity; on Google's AI Overviews, YouTube comes first.

Which sites do ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews cite most?

Community sites such as Reddit lead on ChatGPT and Perplexity, and YouTube comes first on Google's AI Overviews, according to an analysis of over one million citations.

Otterly, a firm that tracks visibility in AI answers, published an analysis in 2026. The analysis covers over one million citations across the three platforms ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Reddit is the most-cited domain overall and on ChatGPT and Perplexity; on Google's AI Overviews, YouTube comes first.

The number does not mean forums replace your own website. It means content about you elsewhere, in a review, a forum or an editorial piece, carries nearly as much weight as your own page when an AI platform looks for an answer.

Do the three AI platforms cite the same kinds of sites?

No: Google's AI Overviews cites brand domains far more often than Perplexity does.

The same analysis shows that Google's AI Overviews cites brand domains 59.8 percent of the time. ChatGPT does so 44.7 percent of the time, and Perplexity only 28.9 percent of the time. Perplexity leans more heavily on community forums, 16.9 percent of its citations, more than the other two platforms.

The practical consequence: a strategy that works for Google's AI Overviews does not automatically carry a result into Perplexity. That is why measuring AI search visibility looks at each platform separately, not a single combined score.

Can AI bots read your site at all?

The same Otterly study claims that 73 percent of websites have technical barriers blocking AI platform bots from accessing their content. It gives no sample or method in its post. Content that a bot never reads has no chance of being cited, no matter how good the writing itself is. This barrier comes before any question about the quality of the text.

Which content carries more weight once the bots can read it?

Content that cites authoritative sources, quotes directly and adds statistics: in a research setting these raised visibility by up to 40 percent.

An academic paper by a team led by Pranjal Aggarwal, published as a preprint in 2023 and updated in 2024, introduces a benchmark called GEO-bench and measures specific techniques: citing authoritative sources, adding direct quotations, and adding statistics raise a page's visibility in generative answers by up to 40 percent. The figure comes from a controlled research setting, not a real website. The individual techniques work with different strength across different fields, in the authors' own words.

Otterly also makes a claim it shows no method for. Content it labels "reference-grade," meaning chunked, quotable and schema-tagged pages, gets three to five times more citations than content without these traits.

How much of the screen do AI Overviews take up?

A study by Botify and Demandsphere from December 2024 measures how much screen space AI Overviews takes up together with featured snippets. The result is about 67.1 percent of the screen on desktop and 75.7 percent on mobile, when both appear together. A separate Semrush study from June 2025 identifies the most-cited domain in AI Overviews overall: Quora, followed by Reddit.

The two studies look at different angles. The first shows that when AI Overviews and featured snippets appear together, they take up most of the screen. The second, by Semrush in 2025, puts Quora and Reddit at the top in AI Overviews; Otterly's 2026 analysis sees YouTube first there. Together they suggest that fewer eyes reach your own website, and that communities lead among the cited sources.

Questions

Should we post on Reddit and forums instead of our own website?

Not instead, in addition. Your own website remains the one place you fully control and can fix immediately once you spot an error in an AI answer.

Which of the studies here is the most reliable?

Otterly's analysis is the most recent of those listed here and the only one covering three platforms at once. The Ahrefs study is larger by number of URLs but looks only at AI Overviews. The smaller studies add a specific angle, but do not claim the same volume of data.

Does longer content get cited more often by AI Overviews?

Not according to a large Ahrefs study. It analyzed 560,346 AI Overviews with 1,677,876 cited URLs and found a correlation of only 0.04 between text length and citation frequency, practically zero. 53.4 percent of cited pages are under 1,000 words, and only 16 percent exceed 2,000 words. Cited pages average 1,282 words, slightly above the 1,188-word average for ordinary Google rankings. Structure and a clear answer matter more than length by itself.
