Website maintenance or redesign: what is the difference?
Maintenance works on the existing site’s condition; redesign reconsiders its structure, content or presentation. The choice depends on an established cause and required scope, not age or appearance alone.
What does maintenance preserve?
LowCode Agency describes maintenance within the existing structure: checks, fixes, updates and content. It also identifies overlap with redesign in performance and editing. This is a general description; the particular contract defines the tasks.
Our Monitoring and Care service checks the inventory and fixes problems within the agreed scope. Routine version updates and backups, new features and redesign receive separate proposals. Site age alone does not determine the work needed.
What does redesign change?
Navigation, page organisation, messaging, the visual system or platform may be reworked. SPINX Digital identifies dated presentation, mobile difficulties and weak results as signals to consider. Gravitate adds system limitations and a mismatch with the current offer.
These are questions to investigate, not proof that a full redesign is necessary. Falling enquiries may call for checking measurement, traffic, the form or the offer itself. Changing colours does not establish the cause or guarantee more customers.
How do operational and structural problems differ?
A broken form may need a particular repair. A structure unsuited to new services may need a reworking project. But a symptom is insufficient: slow loading may have a local cause or reflect the architecture.
Record the problem, affected steps and evidence. Compare a limited fix, visual refresh and broader change against the cause. A recurring fault merits investigation without proving that the whole site needs replacing.
What is the working rhythm?
Maintenance may be recurring service or a particular task, according to the contract. Redesign usually has an agreed scope and end, followed by separate care if chosen. A weekly or monthly rhythm does not mean identical checks across suppliers.
Gravitate gives an indicative four to six weeks for a small redesign and eight to sixteen or more for a complex project. This is the agency’s example, not an ErgoStrat timescale or a guarantee for your site. Content, approvals, integrations and testing affect the plan.
What should you check before choosing?
Start with specific questions:
- Can visitors complete the important task, including on a phone?
- Can staff maintain the needed content, and does it reflect current services?
- What has changed in results, and is measurement reliable under comparable conditions?
The answers identify what needs investigating. An awkward button may suit a limited fix; an unsuitable journey may need broader work. Choose a scope with a checkable acceptance criterion rather than a label without defined tasks.
Questions
Can maintenance lead to redesign?
Yes, reporting may identify a problem worth addressing in a separate project. Recurrence is a reason to investigate the cause, not automatic proof of a structural defect or permission for a new project.
Is a small redesign better than more maintenance?
It depends on the cause. A limited change may suffice if it addresses the established problem. A visual refresh alone does not fix an unclear offer or faulty measurement.
Who determines the type of problem?
The team and specialists using evidence, tests and the agreed scope. The same symptom can have different causes. Request an explanation and a way to check the result after a change.
Does redesign include care after launch?
Only as agreed. Define acceptance, post-launch fixes, warranty terms and subsequent care. A monthly service is not automatically added to every project.

Next step
Start with the symptom and check the cause.
Our monitoring follows the agreed inventory and records recurring problems in the monthly report. If the cause calls for broader work, we propose it separately. Describing a symptom starts an investigation; it does not promise an exact diagnosis or an automatic decision to redesign.
