Monitoring and Care

What is the difference between website maintenance and hosting?

Hosting provides the environment that serves a site to visitors. Maintenance is the agreed work on its condition and functions. They may share a package, but paying for one does not establish that the other is included.

What is hosting?

Site files and resources need somewhere to be stored and served. This may be a shared, managed or cloud environment; the provider need not own every physical server. Data and outside services may sit elsewhere.

CommonPlaces distinguishes hosting, the domain and DNS. One company may supply them without making them the same service. Check capacity, limits, security, backups and restoration. TechArk explicitly notes that backups are not a given with every hosting service.

What is maintenance?

The general term may include system, theme and plugin updates, edits, link and code repairs, and functional checks. These are possible tasks, not every contract’s contents. A site without that software does not need the same updates as WordPress.

Separate monitoring, repairs, backup, restoration and development. In our Monitoring and Care service, routine version updates and backups, new features and redesign are separate work with a proposal. Another provider’s maintenance list does not add them to our scope.

Why is one not automatically included in the other?

A paid server does not establish that someone tests the form or fixes content. A paid edit does not solve an infrastructure fault on its own. Yet the layers can sometimes help each other: configuration, caching or an environment change may form part of a separately agreed solution.

Establish the cause and owner of a problem. With different providers, record who gathers evidence, contacts the host and may change settings. A single supplier may simplify contact without guaranteeing a good response.

When is there a combined package?

SiteCare publishes Gold and Diamond plans combining hosting, DNS management and Cloudflare CDN with monitoring and care services. The page also describes backups and malware checks. This is a particular supplier’s offer, not evidence of how the whole market operates.

Compare the actual plan: backup frequency and retention, restoration, checks, work hours and response. Different features on one page do not establish that every feature is in every package. Request written confirmation and check whether joining requires moving the site.

Questions

Does good hosting make maintenance cheaper?

Not automatically. The environment may reduce some problems, but tasks and workload depend on the site and contract. There is no rule that hours always remain identical or the price must fall.

Can one company supply both?

Yes. Check the package, responsibilities and escalation. A shared provider does not remove the need for a defined scope and access to your own accounts.

How do we establish what we are paying for?

Compare the invoice with the proposal and terms. Domain, email, storage, checks and work hours may be separate items. “Domain” alone does not establish hosting, and “maintenance” does not establish included updates.

Does changing maintenance require new hosting?

Not necessarily. It depends on whether the new supplier works in your current environment or requires its own platform. Agree access, compatibility, handover and responsibilities before changing.

Next step

Compare hosting and work on the site separately.

Our starting inventory establishes where the site runs and what we can monitor in that environment. It records which checks cover hosting and which cover site functions. The inventory itself does not add hosting, migration or other work beyond the agreement.
