Will AI answers replace SEO?
No, AI answers will not replace SEO, at least not the way it was predicted. Gartner predicted in 2024 a 25 percent drop in the volume of classic search by 2026, because of AI chatbots. As of August 2026, Google still holds over 91 percent of the worldwide search engine market, and Google itself says its AI features are increasing searches overall. Google's own AI Overviews rests, per Google's documentation, on the same ranking and quality systems as ordinary search.
Did search drop by a quarter, as forecast?
No: the figures show no 25 percent drop, and Google says its AI features are increasing searches overall.
Gartner published a forecast on 19 February 2024 that the volume of classic search would drop 25 percent by 2026, as AI chatbots and virtual agents absorbed part of the queries. The forecast came from an analyst at the firm and has been widely quoted ever since.
StatCounter's data from August 2026 shows a different picture: Google holds 91.1 percent of the worldwide search engine market. Share, however, does not measure search volume. The stronger evidence on volume comes from Google itself: it says AI Overviews and AI Mode are driving "an incremental increase in Search queries overall" (Q2 2026). These figures show no drop by a quarter. The more accurate description is that search itself changed. Google built AI Overviews directly into its own results, instead of letting users leave for a separate chatbot.
Does AI-written content hurt rankings?
Not directly: the percentage of AI text barely changes from position one to ten. Pages with a lot of AI text do, however, get fewer impressions.
Ahrefs published a study on 27 July 2026 covering one million pages pulled from the top ten positions of one hundred thousand results from June 2026. Of these, one hundred fifty thousand pages had enough content for an analysis of their AI-content share. Finding: the share of AI content rises gently and gradually from position one to position ten, with no sharp threshold. Pages in position one carry an average of 27.1 percent AI content, and position ten carries 30.9 percent. The study itself describes this difference as a "gentle gradient," not a hard cutoff.
The more important number for a website owner is this. Pages with low or moderate AI-content levels get two to three times more impressions than pages with a high AI-content level. Google does not punish AI text with a low share, but a higher share correlates with weaker performance.
Do AI Overviews replace ordinary rankings?
No: they rest on the same ranking systems, and a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be cited.
SEO.com analyzed 2.37 million US queries and found that AI Overviews appears at a different rate depending on the query type. For informational queries, it appears 38.7 percent of the time. For commercial queries, it appears 21.3 percent of the time. For transactional queries, it appears 15.8 percent of the time. For navigational queries, it appears only 11.4 percent of the time. Separately, Similarweb data put the share of Google searches that end with no click at all at 68 percent by mid-2026, with or without an AI summary, because the user gets an answer directly on the results page.
The SEO.com and Similarweb numbers describe a change in searcher behaviour, not the disappearance of search itself. Google's AI summaries rest on the same ranking and quality systems as ordinary search. To be cited in them, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
What does Google itself say about SEO and AI search?
In 2026 Google published its own documentation stating that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and therefore remains SEO. This is the company's own position, not a third party's opinion. The foundations of classic SEO, a readable website, a clear structure, reliable sources, remain the same foundations for appearing in AI answers too.
Questions
Should I stop investing in SEO because of AI answers?
Not based on the data here. AI Overviews rests on the same ranking systems as ordinary search, and rankings depend on the same SEO foundations, not a separate, parallel process.
Then why do I hear that traffic is dropping?
Because more queries end with no click, even when your page is the one cited. Appearing in front of the buyer stays, but it does not always bring a visit to the website. That is why AI search visibility measures who is named, not only who gets a click.
Which industries lose the most traffic to AI Overviews?
Healthcare is among the hardest hit, per Semrush data for 2025: a 30.09 percent drop in organic traffic, followed by banking at 27.09 percent, education at 26.88 percent and wellness at 25.64 percent. This comes from an analysis of seventeen industries over January to December 2025. Only four industries kept growing that year: apparel, up 21.91 percent, beauty, up 19.52 percent, food, up 0.91 percent, and retail, up 0.52 percent. Semrush links the drop to how often queries in those industries trigger AI Overviews. It links the growth to visual, product-driven categories where users still browse and compare before clicking. The difference shows that AI Overviews' effect is not uniform, it depends on the type of query in each industry.
